Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins

The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League are the top minor-league affiliate of the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins. The team played its first game at Wachovia Arena on November 13, 1999, defeating the Kentucky Thoroughblades.

The team has had four coaches in its history: Glenn Patrick (1999-2003), Michel Therrien (2003-2005), Joe Mullen (2005-2006) and Todd Richards (2006-present).

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers

The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers of the AF2 arena football league played their first game at Wachovia Arena on April 6, 2002, losing to the Greensboro Prowlers.

The team’s initial ownership group included Hall of Famer Johnny Unitas.

The team has had four head coaches in its history: Larry Kuharich (2002-2003), Dean Cokins (2003), (Les Moss (2003-2006), Rich Ingold (2006-present)
